Poker Rules

Poker is a popular type of card game in which players bet on the value of the card combination (hand) in their possession, by placing a bet into a central pot. The winner is the one who holds the hand with the highest value according to an established hand rankings hierarchy, or otherwise the player who remains in the hand after all others have folded (the player who makes an un-called bet).

General Poker Rules

A poker hand consists of five cards. Any hand in a higher category beats any hand in a lower category. Between hands in the same category the rank of the individual cards decides which is better. In games where a player has more than five cards and selects five to form a poker hand, the remaining cards do not play any part in the ranking. Poker ranks are always based on five cards only.

The suits of the cards are mainly used in determining whether a hand fits a certain category (specifically the flush and straight flush hands). In most variants of poker rules, if two players have hands that are identical except for suit, then they are tied and split the pot.

Playing Poker Rules

In casual play, the right to deal a hand typically rotates among the players and is marked by a token called a dealer button (or "buck"). In a casino, a house dealer handles the cards for each hand, but the button (typically a white plastic disk) is rotated clockwise among the players to indicate a nominal dealer to determine the order of betting.

One or more players are required to make forced bets (usually called a blind or an ante) to create an initial stake for which the players will contest. The dealer shuffles the cards, cuts, and deals the appropriate number of cards to the players one at a time. Cards may be dealt either face-up or face-down, depending on the variant of poker being played. After the initial deal, the first of what may be several betting rounds begins. Between rounds, the players' hands develop in some way, often by being dealt additional cards or replacing cards previously dealt. At the end of each round, all bets are gathered into the central pot.

At any time during a betting round, if one player bets and no opponents choose to call (match) the bet, the hand ends immediately, the bettor is awarded the pot, no cards are required to be shown, and the next hand begins. This is what makes bluffing possible. Bluffing is a primary feature of poker, one that distinguishes it from other vying games and from other games that make use of poker hand rankings.

Poker Rules Variants

While poker players who play in casinos, tournaments and online tend to specialize in a small number of games (mostly Texas Hold'em but also Omaha, 7-Card Stud and a few others) most home poker games are probably still played in the traditional format known as "dealer's choice". The dealer of each hand specifies the poker variant that will be played in that hand. The variant chosen can be anything that is fair and that the dealer can clearly explain to the players.

Many poker games used community cards (also called shared cards or window cards), which are cards dealt face up to the center of the table and shared by all players. In these games, each player is dealt privately an incomplete hand (hole cards), which is then combined with the community cards to make a complete hand. The set of community cards is called the board, and may be dealt in a simple line or arranged in a special pattern. Poker rules of each game determine how they may be combined with each player's private hand. The most popular community card game today is Texas hold 'em.

Other games that use poker hand rankings and poker rules may likewise be referred to as "poker". Video poker is a single-player computer game that functions much like a slot machine.

Draw Poker Rules

Draw poker is any poker variant in which each player is dealt a complete hand before the first betting round, and then develops the hand for later rounds by replacing, or "drawing", cards.

Texas Hold'em Poker Rules

Texas Hold'em Poker is a community card game with four betting rounds. One player acts as dealer. This position is called the button and it rotates clockwise after every hand. The two players to the left of the dealer are the small blind and the big blind, respectively. They are the only players who have money in the pot before the cards are dealt. Every player receives two cards face down. These are hole cards. The first betting round begins with the player sitting immediately to the left of the big blind, and continues clockwise.

When the first betting round is completed, three community cards are flipped face up on the table. This is called the flop. The second round of betting begins with the first remaining player seated to the left of the button. The betting resumes, clockwise. When the second round of betting is finished, a fourth community card is flipped face up on the table. This is called the turn. The third round of betting commences with the first remaining player sitting to the left of the button. The betting moves clockwise, with the bets doubling on the turn. When the third round of betting is over, a fifth community card is flipped face up on the table. This is called the river.

The fourth round of betting starts with the first remaining player seated to the left of the button. The betting continues to move clockwise.

The players must combine their hole cards with the community cards to make the best possible 5-card poker hand.

Stud Poker Rules

Stud poker is any of a number of poker variants in which each player receives a mix of face-down and face-up cards dealt in multiple betting rounds. Stud games are also typically non-positional games, meaning that the player who bets first on each round may change from round to round (it is usually the player whose face-up cards make the best hand for the game being played). The cards dealt face down to each individual player are called hole cards (which gave rise to the common English expression ace in the hole, which suggests that one has something valuable that is hidden from view).

The number of betting rounds in a game influences how well the game plays with different betting structures. Games with four or fewer betting rounds, such as five-card stud and Mississippi stud, play well with any structure, and are especially well suited to no limit and pot limit play. Games with more betting rounds are more suited to fixed limit or spread limit. It is common (and recommended) for later betting rounds to have higher limits than earlier ones.
